Summary Synopsis

To watch and to think about Black, Blue felt complex feelings mixed up friendship, calmness, worry and hostility, and a feeling to watch like a Doppelgänger. Blue searched Black by some measures, but the case didn’t make progress. About one year passed by, Black’s life didn’t vary. A summer day, Blue followed Black, Black took a seat at a lounge of a hotel, and Blue shared the table with Black. Then Black said “I’m a private detective. My current job is to watch someone. He doesn't do anything…"

Book Review

Ghosts is a novelette by Paul Auster and the second volume of his New York Trilogy. And the most symbolic and representative work of the trilogy. This novel is to be said “postmodernist literature”, but the expression and the description are plain, yet to understand the veritable meanings of content and theme is difficult. The style of this novel is unique and particular, and the description is minimal and metaphorical. This novel is a psychological and philosophical story that uses the form and style of a detective story or mystery story, describes the lack of human existence, the question for self, the emptiness of contemporary routine life and the impossibility of writing a novel or a story. Also, it’s a novelette to deconstruct the form and the significance of story or grand narrative.

Blue was requested by White, to watch and investigate Black and to send weekly reports. But Black only did his routine in solitude more than one year, and to watch Black, Blue felt a dilemma between friendship or pity and impatience or anxiety, and to watch his Doppelgänger or looking-glass self. And Blue couldn’t act freely, he was in a closed and limited situation, he reflected on his life and tormented the strange existence of Black. So this novel is a detective story without an incident and a mystery without a murder, and no significant incident occurred until the end. Half of this novel describes the contemporary sober and monotonous life and its emptiness. I think one theme of this novel is the lack of self and real existence of people live in contemporary society, and to escape from the monotonous routine life.

Characters of this novel are named by colors. It has an effect the world of this novel appears monotonous, colorless and blur to a reader. Colors are signifiers or surficial meanings of things and persons, it implies today’s people and things have no reality, soul and content. The names of colors strengthen the world of this novel become monotonous.

And the word ghost in this novel means traces or spirits of persons who passed away, and a metaphor of men of emptiness such as writers, detectives and the state of today’s people spent a vacant life. Writers and detectives think out, make up or trace others’ stories or plots, they don’t live a story of themselves. On the other hand, today’s people live in story or discours made by others or society. I think this novel splendidly succeeded to describe the nothingness and the impossibility of writing story itself by describing a novel.

In this novel, White's request is impossible at first and his aim was ambiguous. So Blue and readers seek an incident and an enigma themselves. In the other words, they seek the story and the meanings to follow.

In the end, Blue found a pile of paper in Black’s room was Blue’s weekly reports. This implies the story and the world of this novel are operated by Black. Blue was controlled by Black, also readers are controlled by him. And the story can’t be said as a proper story, it’s vain and nothing had happened. Then Blue read Black’s manuscript and he knew it was Blue’s story, Black’s biography is identical to Blue’s life or this novel Ghosts itself that we read. This novel is a novel about a novel. And, so, this novel is also a story that deconstructs and breaks out of the modern subjective structure of story.

This novel is also a story of many excellent, vivid and skillful citations and cited episodes. Citations are Blue’s aspiration in his head and his wish to escape from dull Black’s case and the unexciting life. Also, the story is made up of parts and fragments, it's the thought about the literature of Paul Auster. By Auster’s thought, a story is only built by others’ fragments and data for better or worse. And writer or novelist doesn’t write by his subjectivity.

Paul Auster deconstructed the proper story by writing a novel, and he succeeded to write a story of the nothingness or the nihilism as today’s problem of there’s no story and its meanings, the impossibility of writing by writing the nothingness itself causes the impossibility of writing a story.

I think this novel is today's existentialist novel which describes the sufferings of existence as today’s people have no self and real existence. There’s no proper, positive and subjective story. We must live in the world of emptiness, nothingness and that stories are deconstructed.

The later part of this novel is the beginning of the end, Blue said. I think this novel is Paul Auster’s end of the beginning. His beginning is this radical and brilliant deconstruction of story or novel, then his true novelist career and veritable his own grand story begun from following works.

Paul Auster’s third (or second) novel and the second volume of the New York Trilogy. And the most symbolic and representative work of the trilogy.

Form, Style & Structure

A novelette uses the form and style of a detective story or mystery story. But it’s a philosophical and psychological story that describes the lack of human existence, the question for self, the emptiness of contemporary routine life and the impossibility of writing a novel or a story. Also, this is a novelette to deconstruct (the form of) story or narrative.

This novelette has no chapter and no blank line. I think it may imply this story is one (imaginary) allegory or a myth, inspite of more than one year passed in this story.

Characters

Blue – A private detective in New York. Blue was fond of deteptive stories and movies, and was not the Sherlock Holmes type. He wanted to dramatic and adventurous cases, but was imposed on a dull case, to watch Black all the time.

Black – A person to investigate by Blue, lives in an apartment in Brooklyn, and worked, wrote something, read books and ate beside the window most of the day. His hobby is to know the life of writers. (177) He said he was a private detective followed and watched a mysterious man who spent unchanging monotonous life over a year, in fact, the man is Blue. His true shape is White. (180 – 184) And he was like the Doppelgänger, the alter-ego or the looking-glass self of Blue. Blue felt friendship, harmony and sympathy for Black, also felt anxiety, fretfulness and hostility. The dilemma is an important plot of this novel.

White – A client of Blue, requested him to follow and investigate Black. When he visited the office of Blue, he disguised himself with a black beard, overly bushy eyebrows and white powder. (137) He appeared with a strange Hallowe’en mask at the Brooklyn Post Office and took a report by Blue. He noticed Blue and run away. (168 – 169) His true shape is Black. The case was devised by him from the beginning.

Brown – The former boss of Blue, told detective methods and skills to Blue. He had retired and lived in Florida, spent most of his time fishing.

Gray – He had been missing for several years, suffered the loss of memory. Blue found him at a bar near the house of Gray’s wife. So Green married with his wife twice. (141 – 142)

Gold – A coroner of Philadelphia. After he had retired, still devoted himself and pursued a murder of a boy. (143 – 144)

Jimmy Rose – An poor beggar old man, the little Blue knew. Blue disguised him to talk with Black. (173 – 179)

Apartment rent by White – A small studio apartment on the third floor, directly across the street from Black’s, was in Orange Street, Brooklyn. Strangely, it was fully equipped with furniture, kitchen supplies and a complete set of clothes fits for Blue.

Orange Street – A street exists in Brooklyn, New York. There were Blue and Black rooms. Walt Whitman worked on the street, Henry David Thoreau visited there to hear Henry Ward Beecher’s sermon at Plymouth Church, and Abraham Lincoln and Charles Dickens walked through the street and visited the church. Black strolled through Center Streent and Chinatown, then he entered a bookstore, and Blue watched Black. In the meantime, Blue found Walden and bought it. Then Black walked to the central area of Manhattan, and entered a restaurant. He met a girlfriend. Midway through the meal, Blue detected a great sadness of Black’s face and the woman was crying. She walked off to the ladies’ room, but she went back to the table looking a little-better. They got out from the restaurant. Black walked about, paused in front of a travel agency window and looked a poster of the White Mountains. Then he into a cab and returned his apartment. Blue followed him by a cab. Blue found the first cheque from White in his mailbox.

1. Are Novelists Tolerant Persons?

Many novelists have no harmonious personality and appropriate view.

I think a novel as such, anyone who wants to write it can write it. Who can write text, has a ball pointed-pen and a note and own certain ability makes a story, can write a novel anyway without a specialist training. Novel is a form of expression that has a broad entrance. But to continue to write good novels and to be a novelist is difficult.

To write a novel is not suitable for smart persons. To tell a story does at a slow pace. It is not smart work and is a succession of paraphrases as “for example” to express a personal theme. I think there’s the truth of the novel in this roundabout process.

I respect novelists who continue to write novels, they own core, will, endurance and requirement as a professional novelist.

2. When I Became A Novelist

Before I became a novelist, I ran a jazz café (The Japanese unique style café, plays jazz records.) from I was a university student. It was hard and tough work and life, but I spent the time happily. At end of my twenties, through this hard life, my mind reached a "settled and open space".

A clear spring afternoon, the 1978 opening day of the Central League, at the Meiji Jingu Stadium, I lay down on the outfield lawn bleachers and watched the game. When the first batter of the Yakult Swallows, Dave Hilton hit a fine double, at the moment, an epiphany fell into me, then he realized “That’s it, maybe, I can write a novel !”.

Anyway, I wrote the first manuscript of my debut novel Hear the Wind Sing as I like, but I didn’t satisfy it. So, I translated it to English and I translated the English translation to Japanese again. Then I got a neutral and flexible style that has my own natural voice.

The manuscript was adopted and was awarded a prize, so I became a novelist unexpectedly.

3. On Literature Prizes

I've kept a distance from the Japanese literary circles. Because I was an ordinary man, so I don’t know much about the circles and literature prizes. I think true writers treasure a response of which they create meaningful things and exist of readers understand the means. And I have no qualification to be a member of a literature prize committee, because I’m a too egocentric person, and to continue to write novels I must be egocentric.

4. On Originality

I think conditions that we can mention a creator is original are below. 1. A creator owns his original style apparently different from others. 2. And the creator can do version up the style by own energy. 3. The style must become a standard and it will be taken in people criterion of judgment.

"To reduce anything from yourself" is necessary work to be original. We get and have lots of content and information in the process of life. So we throw away wasteful things and simplify a brain, then we can act freely. I think the most important question to be original is “are you happy to do it like that ?”. If my originality maybe exists, it’s caused by my free and natural sense. I’ve written novels by my own voluntary natural and free will of I want to only write a novel.

5. Well, What Should I Write?

Young people who want to be a writer should read many novels first. And they should watch people, scenes and things. Then stock them as “materials” in their brain.

I had been felt I have no things to write, because I was a usual boy who didn't experience particular experiences, all the same, the fact becomes a weapon, means I can write freely anything by the magic of combination like the “E. T. system“ when I start to write a novel once.

6. Taking Side with Time: To Write Long a Novel

I think I'm a long novel writer basically. To a long novel as "a total story owns a possibility may reform myself“, I need a vast “space” I can use freely and unlimitedly. When I write a long novel I make rules and a routine, such as I do the work of long novel only and I write 4000 characters every day without fail like a factory.

After I finish writing the first draft anyway, I rest for a week, and I rewrite and boldly edit it for a month to two months. And I redo the same process. After the rest of a week, I rewrite the second draft, it is an accumulation of detailed edits, additions and adjustments of the consistency of the story, descriptions of sceneries and tones of talkings. Then I put the manuscript in my drawer for half a year to one year, and I rewrite and finish it.

To rewrite a novel or the attitude is important for novelists, I think. I like very much to rewrite a manuscript many times. I can say I prefer to rewrite rather than write the first draft.

7. An Extremely Personal and Physical Activity

To write a long novel is extremely lonely and personal work. I shut myself up in my studio and write for five or six hours every day, this daily routine goes on one to three years. To keep it up, I need physical strength and a sturdy body, then they gain agility of thinking and flexibility of spirit. Spirit or brain is a part of the physical body equally.

To write a novel or to tell a grand story is to go down the bottom of one's darkness of mind by oneself, bring back and face with it. The act is dangerous, I need a certain physical strength. People want a novelist to the “antisocial characteristic”, but I think a novelist shouldn’t express his chaos in his private life. I spend a usual and healthy life for I write a novel.

8. About School

I didn't like schools and their education. The study of schools was a bore, and I thought to read many novels, to intently listen to music and to go with a girl are important person studies.

Since I was a high school student, I've red many English paperbacks, so I can read English books through anyway. But my results of English tests are not well, also students who got high marks in English should have no ability to read an English book through. So I understand the English education in Japanese high schools don’t do for students to learn living actual English, it does for to gain the score of university entrance exams exclusively.

The aim of the Japanese education system is to make obedient people. It influences the whole Japanese social system such as companies and government officials. Its rigidness of numerical system, and efficiency and utilitarianism like mechanical memorizing, cause serious losses in various fields.

I think imagination is very important in any period. The thing that is on the opposite side of imagination is efficiency. I only wish for schools to “don’t suppress the imagination of a child already own his imagination”.

9. What Characters That I Should Present?

I hardly use a real person as a model of a character. Characters are automatically created during I write a novel. To describe characters, you must watch the appearances and sayings of people and keep them in mind.

I think I can become anyone by writing a novel, also a novelist is partly created and modified by his novel.

Afterword

5 or 6 years ago I thought of that I have to write down a text about writing a novel. The manuscripts of this book are written on the assumption for a lecture meeting. (But I didn’t speak the content of this book.) This book would be regarded as an “autobiographical essay”, yet I only wish to write down as concretely and actually as possible how I worked and spent as a novelist. This book may be an egocentric text, though I appreciate it if it’s useful to readers.
