Für Elise, WoO 8 (comp. Ludwig van Beethoven), Allemagne, ALLMGN025 | Classical Music Recording Release

Liner Notes / Sleeve Notes

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Für Elise, officially titled Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59), is one of the most recognized and enduring classical piano pieces in history. Composed around 1810, the work was never published during Beethoven’s lifetime; it was discovered and released posthumously in 1867 by musicologist Ludwig Nohl, who transcribed the original manuscript. The true identity of “Elise” remains a famous historical mystery, though scholars widely believe it was dedicated either to Therese Malfatti, a woman Beethoven proposed to around that time whose name may have been miscopied by Nohl, or to Elisabeth Röckel, a talented soprano and close friend of the composer.

Musically, the piece is structured in a classic rondo form (A-B-A-C-A), alternating its famous recurring theme with two contrasting episodes. The iconic opening section features a delicate, arpeggiated motif shifting between A minor and E major, creating a sense of intimate, romantic melancholy that is easily accessible to intermediate pianists. In contrast, the middle sections introduce brighter, more technically complex passages, including a lyrical F major episode and a turbulent, dramatic bass section that showcases Beethoven’s signature stormier style. Because of its blend of simple grace and dramatic flair, Für Elise has transcended its origins as a minor album leaf to become a staple of piano pedagogy, popular culture, and classical music repertoire worldwide.

Beethoven: 12 German Dances, WoO 8, Hess 100, Allemagne, ALLMGN024 | Classical Music Recording Release

Liner Notes / Sleeve Notes

Ludwig van Beethoven’s 12 German Dances (12 Deutsche Tänze), WoO 8, is a vibrant collection of orchestral dance pieces composed in 1895 for the Vienna Artists’ Guild ball. Written when Beethoven was a rising young composer in Vienna, these works belong to the tradition of popular social music intended for dancing rather than serious concert performance. The set consists of twelve short, buoyant dances in 3/4 time, reflecting the lively German dance and early waltz forms that were hugely popular in Austrian ballrooms during the late eighteenth century. Beethoven scored the collection for a standard classical orchestra featuring strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, using bright instrumentation to capture a joyous, festive atmosphere. While the individual dances are simple in structure, they display Beethoven’s early mastery of rhythmic drive, memorable melodic hooks, and subtle dynamic contrast. Though often overshadowed by his grand symphonic works, WoO 8 offers a charming glimpse into the functional, lighthearted side of Beethoven’s output and remains a delightful example of Viennese Hausmusik and dance hall entertainment from his early period.
