Ein junger Mann aus Paris begann, eine Fahrschule zu besuchen, um einen Führerschein zu bekommen. Er lernte Pascale Polougaïevski kennen, die Büroangestellte der Fahrschule. Sie verliebten sich sofort und unbewusst und führten ein gewöhnliches, aber langweiliges Leben mit Herrn Pascal und Pierre, Pascale’s Tochter. Sie unternahmen auch zwei ziellose, aber überstürzte Reisen nach England.

Auf der Rückfahrt nach Paris, auf einer Fähre, nahm der junge Mann eine Kodak Instamatic Kamera, und er machte fortlaufend Fotos, während er die Treppe hinauf- und hinunterlief, um die Filmkassette zu beenden und herauszunehmen…

Buchrezension

Jean-Philippe Toussaint beschreibt in L’appareil-photo oberflächlich das banale, langweilige und triviale, aber humorvolle Alltagsleben der Pariser. Dieser Roman fängt eine Zeit oder einen Abschnitt des Erzählers ein. Die Botschaft und die Essenz dieses Romans liegen im Denken des Erzählers, das irgendwo beschrieben wird, und in der Philosophie, die diese Erzählung vollständig ausdrückt.

Das Thema dieses Romans ist der Lauf der Zeit, Bewegung und Stillstand, das gewöhnliche Leben, Banalität und Zufall, sowie der Sinn des Lebens und seine Vergänglichkeit. Autofahren, Fliegen und Reisen sind Elemente der Bewegung. Fotografie, Gasflaschen und Regen sind hingegen unbewegliche oder bewegungslose Elemente. Das tiefe Thema und die Essenz sind somit die Empfindlichkeit des Zeitablaufs, der Widerspruch zwischen Bewegung und Stillstand und der Sinn, der zwischen Bewegung und Stillstand existiert. Der Mensch existiert an dem Ort und in der Zeit zwischen Bewegung und Stillstand.

Wir rückten unwiderstehlich vor, und ich fühlte mich auch vorrücken, das Meer mühelos und ohne Zwang durchschneidend, als würde ich allmählich sterben, wie ich vielleicht lebte, ich wusste es nicht, es war einfach und ich konnte nichts dagegen tun, ich ließ mich von der Bewegung des Schiffes in der Nacht mitreißen und, starr auf den Schaum blickend, der mit einem Plätschern, das die Qualität der Stille hatte, ihre Sanftheit und ihre Weite, an den Rumpf spritzte, mein Leben ging voran, ja, in einem ständiger Erneuerung identischer Schäume. Diese Beschreibung ist das Herzstück von L’appareil-photo und die Verbindung zwischen dem Denken des Erzählers und der Erzählung.

Der Erzähler handelte gut, aber er tat nichts. Er unternahm keine bedeutenden oder großartigen Taten. Auch die Charaktere hatten kein eigenes Ziel. Das ist schließlich das Leben unserer Realität.

Dieser Roman beschreibt die Kontingenz und den gemeinsamen, unverständlichen Sinn des Alltagslebens. All diese Dinge erleben und kennen die Menschen im Leben der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaft in entwickelten Ländern. Wir empfinden diese subtile, potenzielle und unbewusste Leichtigkeit und Traurigkeit. Doch trotz dieser Banalität und Langeweile ist das Alltagsleben etwas Kostbares und Süßes.

Die Kamera ist ein Werkzeug und eine Methode, um Momente jedes Lebens festzuhalten. Sie fängt und fixiert eine Abfolge von Handlungen einer Person oder die Zeit, das Leben und die Existenz.

Dieser Roman selbst ist eine Reihe von Fotos, die das Sein und die Bewegungen des Erzählers und sein Leben festhalten. Er ist langweilig und flüchtig, doch dieser Roman ist schön, süß und ewig.

Summary Synopsis

A young man in Paris began attending driving school to get a driver’s license. He met Pascale Polougaïevski, the driving school’s office employee. They fell in love immediately and unconsciously, and they lived an ordinary but boring life with Mr. Pascal and Pierre, Pascale’s daughter. They also took two aimless but hurried trips to England.

Upon returning to Paris, on a ferry, the young man picked up a Kodak Instamatic camera, and he took photos consecutively, going up and running down the stairs, to finish and remove the film cartridge…

Book Review

Jean-Philippe Toussaint superficially describes the mundane, boring, and trivial, yet humorous, daily life of Parisians in The Camera (L’appareil-photo). This novel captures a moment or a period of the narrator’s life. The message and the essence of this novel exist in the narrator’s thoughts, which are described somewhere, and in the philosophy that this narrative fully expresses.

The theme of this novel is the passage of time, movement and stillness, ordinary life, banality and chance, as well as the meaning of life and its futility. Driving a car, flying, and traveling are elements of movement. Photography, a gas cylinder, and rain, on the other hand, are immobile or motionless elements. Thus, the deep theme and essence are the sensitivity of the passage of time, the contradiction between movement and stillness, and the meaning that exists between movement and stillness. Humans exist in the place and time between movement and stillness.

We advanced irresistibly, and I felt myself advancing too, cleaving the sea effortlessly and without forcing, as if I were gradually dying, as I was perhaps living, I didn’t know, it was simple and I couldn’t do anything about it, I let myself be carried away by the movement of the boat in the night and, staring fixedly at the foam that spurted against the hull with a lapping sound that had the quality of silence, its softness and its amplitude, my life moved forward, yes, in a constant renewal of identical foam. (pp. 95 – 96)

This description is the heart of The Camera, and the link between the narrator’s thought and the narrative.

The narrator acted well, but he did nothing. He did not perform any significant or grand actions. Nor did the characters have any specific goals. This is the life of our reality, after all.

This novel describes the common contingency and incomprehensible meaning of daily life. All people experience and know these things in the life of contemporary society in developed countries. We experience this subtle, potential, and subconscious lightness and sadness. But, despite this banality and boredom, daily life is a precious and sweet thing.

The camera is a tool and a method for capturing moments of each life. It captures and fixes a succession of a person’s actions, or time, life, and existence.

This novel itself is a series of photos that capture the narrator’s being and movements, and his life. It is boring and ephemeral, yet this novel is beautiful, sweet, and eternal.

Résumé

Un jeune homme de Paris commençait à aller à une école de conduite pour obtenir un permis de conduire. Il rencontrait Pascale Polougaïevski, l'employée de bureau de l'école de conduite. Ils tombaient amoureux immédiatement et inconsciemment, et ils passaient une vie ordinaire mais ennuyeuse avec M. Pascal et Pierre, la fille de Pascale. Ils faisaient aussi deux voyages sans but mais précipités vers l'Angleterre.

Au retour à Paris, dans un ferry, le jeune homme prenait un appareil photo Kodak Instamatic, et il prenait des photos consécutivement, en montant et en courant dans l'escalier, pour terminer et retirer la cartouche de film…

Commentaire

Jean-Philippe Toussaint décrit en surface la vie quotidienne banale, ennuyeuse et triviale, mais humoristique, des Parisiens dans L’appareil-photo. Ce roman capture un temps ou un terme du narrateur. Le message et l’essence de ce roman existent dans la pensée du narrateur qui est décrite quelque part, et dans la philosophie que ce récit exprime totalement.

Le thème de ce roman est le cours du temps, le mouvement et l’immobilité, la vie ordinaire, la banalité et le hasard, ainsi que le sens de la vie et sa vanité. Conduire la voiture, l’avion et les voyages sont des éléments en mouvement. La photographie, la bouteille de gaz et la pluie sont, quant à elles, des éléments immobiles ou sans mouvement. Ainsi, le thème et l'essence profonds sont la sensibilité du cours du temps, la contradiction entre le mouvement et l’immobilité, et le sens qui existe entre le mouvement et l’immobilité. Les humains existent à la place et au temps entre le mouvement et l’immobilité.

Nous avancions irrésistiblement, et je me sentais avancer aussi, fendant la mer sans insister et sans forcer, comme si je mourais progressivement, comme je vivais peut-être, je ne savais pas, c’était simple et je n’y pouvais rien, je me laissais entraîner par le mouvement du bateau dans la nuit et, regardant fixement l’écume qui giclait contre la coque dans un bruit de clapotement qui avait la qualité du silence, sa douceur et son ampleur, ma vie allait de l’avant, oui, dans un renouvellement constant d’écumes identiques. (pp. 95 – 96)

Cette description est le cœur de L’appareil-photo, et la liaison entre la pensée du narrateur et le récit.

Le narrateur agissait bien, mais il ne faisait rien. Il ne faisait pas d'action significative ou grandiose. Les personnages n'avaient pas non plus de but propre. C’est la vie de notre réalité, après tout.

Ce roman décrit la contingence et le sens incompréhensible communs de la vie quotidienne. Tous les gens font l'expérience de ces choses et les connaissent dans la vie de la société contemporaine des pays développés. Nous éprouvons cette légèreté et cette tristesse subtiles, potentielles et subconscientes. Mais, malgré cette banalité et cet ennui, la vie quotidienne est une chose précieuse et douce.

L’appareil photo est un outil et une méthode pour prendre des moments de chaque vie. Il capture et fixe une succession d'actions d'une personne, ou le temps, la vie et l’existence.

Ce roman lui-même est une série de photos qui capturent l’être et les mouvements du narrateur et sa vie. C’est ennuyeux et éphémère, pourtant, ce roman est beau, doux et éternel.
